Frequently Asked Questions

Who performs the surgery?

At Colombia Hair Clinic, a team of two surgeons lead every critical phase—from hairline design to graft insertion—unlike 'hair mills' where technicians do the work.  We typically assign a team of two to four technicians per surgery to help prepare the hair follicles for insertion.

What techniques do you speciliaze in?

We offer the gold standards used in Turkey and Miami: FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation). These methods are minimally invasive, leave no linear scars, and ensure a natural-looking hairline.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients describe it as "minor discomfort." We use local anesthesia—similar to a dental visit—to numb the scalp. Once the area is numb, you won't feel pain during the extraction or implantation.

How long does a typical surgery take?

A typical session lasts 6 to 8 hours. For large cases (4,000+ grafts), we may split the procedure over two consecutive days to prioritize graft survival and patient comfort.

Do you speak English?

Yes. Between the patient coordination team and medical staff, we provide full English support to ensure clear communication.

How long is the recovery time?

International patients travel home two days after the surgery.  Additionally, most patients return to light work within 3 to 5 days. Redness and tiny scabs usually disappear within 7–10 days.

Is the hair transplant permanent?

Yes. We harvest follicles from the "permanent zone" at the back and sides of the head. These follicles are genetically resistant to the hormones that cause balding.

Do I need to take medication before or after the transplant?

The medical team will provide specific instructions upon your initial evaluation and post-op. However, it is generally recommended to avoid blood thinners, some vitamins and supplements, in addition to smoking and alcohol one week prior to the hair transplant. Post-op, patients usually take a pain medication, antibiotic and continue with hair loss prevention medications like Dutasteride pr Finasteride and Minoxidil.

Can you work with afro-textured or curly hair?

Yes. We use specialized micro-punches and specific angles to accommodate the unique root structure of Afro and curly hair, ensuring high survival rates.

Do you offer beard or eyebrow transplants?

Absolutely. We apply the same DHI/FUE precision to facial hair restoration for natural density and direction.

Is Colombia Safe for Medical Tourism?

Yes. Colombia welcomed over 6 million international visitors in 2024 and is one of Latin America's fastest-growing medical tourism destinations. Bogotá and Barranquilla are modern, international cities with world-class hospitals and infrastructure.

Is There a Time Difference with the U.S.?

Colombia is on par with Eastern Time Zone (NY) from November to March and during daylight savings time (March to November) it is one hour behind NY and on par with Chicago.

Which airlines fly to Colombia?

There are several airlines which fly direct to Colombia from U.S. cities including American Airlines, Delta, Jet Blue, Latam, Avianca and Copa. We have heard from patients, American Airlines is the most "hair transplant friendly".

Colombia is known for its food and nightlife.  We can help you select great restaurants and coordinate your transportation.  It is important to avoid using dating apps to meet men or women in Colombia and take extra precautions if you go out on the town.
