Assess Your Stage: The Norwood & Ludwig Scales

Identifying the specific pattern and extent of your hair loss is crucial for creating an effective, personalized restoration plan. To ensure the highest surgical precision, our specialists utilize both the Norwood and Ludwig scales to accurately classify your current stage and tailor a surgical approach that delivers natural-looking results.

The Norwood Scale: Male Pattern Baldness

The Norwood Scale, also known as the Norwood-Hamilton scale, classifies male pattern baldness into seven stages. Each stage corresponds to a specific degree of hair loss, ranging from minimal recession at Stage 1 to extensive crown and fronto-temporal area balding at Stage 7. The classification system helps identify patterns and progression of hair loss in men.

Which level are you?

The Norwood Scale

Norwood Scale v3.png

Stage I (Negligible-Mild): Minimal or no recession of the frontal hairline

Stage II (Mild): Slight recession with thinning along the temples

Stage III (Moderate): Further development of a deep U-shaped area around temples

Stage IV (Moderate): Hair loss progresses to a more pronounced receding hairline with sparse or absent temple hair

Stage V (Moderate-Advanced): Balding areas start to merge with increased central scalp exposure

Stage VI (Advanced): Significant balding with only a narrow band of hair separating sides and back

Stage VII (Extensive): Most severe stage with little to no remaining hair on top, leaving only sparse coverage

It’s important to note that while this scale is primarily used for assessing male pattern baldness, it does not apply universally to all individuals experiencing hair loss. Other factors such as age, genetics, and potential underlying medical conditions may contribute to different patterns of hair loss. The doctors at Colombia Hair Clinic can provide you with a treatment plan specific to your condition and goals.

The Ludwig Scale: Female Pattern Thinning

The Ludwig Scale is the three-stage clinical standard for classifying hair loss in women (androgenic alopecia), primarily focusing on the thinning of hair along the central part and the crown while typically preserving the frontal hairline. Unlike male pattern baldness, female hair loss usually presents as thinning on the crown and top of the head, with the hairline generally remaining intact.

  • Stage I (Mild): Early-stage thinning is noticeable on the crown and along the central part, which begins to widen slightly.

  • Stage II (Moderate): Significant thinning is visible across the top of the scalp, with a noticeable decrease in hair density and volume.

  • Stage III (Extensive): The scalp is clearly visible through the remaining hair; at this stage, the hair loss is considered extensive, though a thin "fringe" of hair along the forehead usually remains

Our Services

  • FUE Hair Transplantation (Follicular Unit Extraction) Our signature procedure provides a permanent solution for hair loss without linear scarring. We specialize in high-density transplants for:

    • Scalp: Restoring natural hairlines and crown density.

    • Beard: Shaping and thickening facial hair for a masculine profile.

    • Eyebrows: Precision placement to restore frame and symmetry to the face.

  • Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) A non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses specialized pigments to replicate the appearance of real hair follicles. It is the perfect solution for creating a "buzz-cut" look or adding the illusion of depth to thinning areas where a transplant may not be desired.

  • PRP Therapy (Platelet-Rich Plasma) A regenerative treatment that uses your own blood growth factors to revitalize dormant follicles, strengthen existing hair, and speed up recovery after an FUE procedure.

  • Regular Medical Therapy Focused on long-term hair maintenance and prevention, our medical therapy protocols are designed to halt the progression of hair loss and improve scalp health.   Note: These clinical therapy sessions are available exclusively at our Barranquilla location.

Why Patients Choose Colombia Hair Clinic.

In the world of hair restoration, you are either a patient or a number. While "hair mills" in other regions prioritize speed and assembly-line volume, Colombia Hair Clinic focuses on natural looking results. We believe a hair transplant is a permanent medical investment that requires a personalized, boutique approach.

The Colombia Hair Clinic Advantage

  • Surgeon-led vs. Technician-led: In low-cost hubs, technicians often perform the surgery while the doctor merely supervises. At our clinic, your European-trained surgeon personally leads the design and every critical surgical step.

  • The "One-at-a-Time" Rule: We limit our surgeons to 1–2 procedures per day. This ensures our medical team is fresh, focused, and dedicated entirely to your aesthetic result.

  • Proximity & Luxury Recovery: Avoid 12+ hour flights to impersonal factories. Medellín is just a few hours from major U.S. hubs, for a comfortable, discreet recovery.
